Team-Based Safety Training Activities new eBook, Ladder Safety Bingo, Digital Image Creation, and Types of Safety Training Objectives You Might Not Know About
Most of the safety training activities I create and share involve the use of teams. Why? The principles of accelerated learning say that collaboration and teamwork are effective ways to help trainees learn from their peers. (Plus, it usually makes things more fun:) Additionally, asking trainees to participate in challenging activities with others helps remove any trainee nervousness about needing help to complete an activity or the ability to understand the materials. For people to learn, they need to be in a positive frame of mind. Being nervous or anxious will make it difficult for new information to be absorbed, and team-based activities can help remove these feelings.
This new eBook (for sale on the SafetyFUNdamentals website but FREE for VIP Subscribers) includes key points about team-based safety training activities and includes several recommended activities including LOTO Safety Sequence, Safety Sort, Pin the Pain, a Workshop Hazard Hunt, Million Dollar Madness, and the A-Z Race.

March is Ladder Safety Month
VIP Subscribers received the 2024 Safety Training Calendar in the December issue. (You can find the download link below if you are a VIP and didnβt get yours yet). In that calendar, you can see that one of March's many safety and health themes is focused on ladder safety.
To help you with training related to ladder safety, I have created a Safety Bingo game on the topic. If you are unfamiliar with Safety Bingo, itβs just like regular bingo but instead of reading out random letters and numbers, a facilitator reads out a clue related to the topic. (In this case, itβs ladder safety). If a trainee knows the answer and has that answer on their bingo card, they should cross it off. When a trainee has all boxes crossed off across, down, or on a diagonal, they should yell bingo and be declared the winner. The facilitator should be sure to review all of the answers that the winner crossed off with the entire group. This, and the initial calling of clues, provides repetition of the content which helps increase retention. In the downloadable packet, you will find 10 different bingo sheets (be sure not to give all trainees the same version or everyone will win at the same time) and 25 corresponding clues. Donβt forget - the facilitator should randomly select clues to read out and trainees should then try to find the answer on their bingo sheet and cross it out.

The American Ladder Institute, the organization behind Ladder Safety Month, provides some great training resources on their Ladder Safety Training website including modules on stepladder safety, single and extension ladder safety, articulated ladder safety, and mobile ladder safety. The site uses gamification as well and shows a leaderboard of individuals with high scores who have completed modules. Give it a try here.
Upskilling - Digital Literacy
If you read the December VIP issue, you will be familiar with Upskilling in 2024. This chart includes suggested areas for professional development and each month, I include content on one of the topics as it relates to safety training. This month, we are focusing on one area of Digital Literacy, and specifically, the creation of images. With so much attention being given to AI these days, I am focusing on three AI image-creation tools: Midjourney, Dalle, and Canvaβs AI generator. In my opinion, the best way to learn these technologies is to jump right in and play around. Since the use of images is very important in effectively communicating safety information, this is a great skill to work on in 2024.
Midjourney operates through Discord and costs $8/month or $96/year. If you don't have one, create a free Discord account (https://discord.com/) to get started. Next, you will need to create a Midjourney subscription.Β
