What’s Up in May?

VIP Subscribers received the 2024 Safety Training Calendar in the December issue. (You can find the download link below if you are a new VIP and haven’t received yours yet). In that calendar, you can see that one of May's many safety and health themes is focused on electrical safety. (It's the Electrical Safety Foundation's National Electrical Safety Month). The following infographic, created by the Electrical Safety Foundation, provides a great overview of common electrical hazards. You can find this infographic on ESFI’s website.

If you have been reading this newsletter for a while, you know I love using infographics as part of safety training. You will find many related resources if you search for infographics on this newsletter’s website. One of my favorite ways to use infographics is to use them as a class review and then modify the infographic to be used as a learning activity. Look at the example below, created by modifying the Common Electrical Hazards Infographic shown above. In this example, you would review the original infographic with the class, distribute the modified version, and ask trainees to work on it together to fill in the missing information. When all teams of trainees have finished, review the correct answers with the entire group. This provides an additional review, which can further increase retention.

Modified Infographic - to download this version click here.

If you are interested, I have written a small (FREE) book titled β€œSafety Training with Infographics” which is available on the SafetyFUNdamentals website. You can find it here.

What’s In Your Bag?

What’s In Your Bag is a new section of The Safety Training Net where expert trainers and public speakers share what they carry with them to be as prepared as possible when delivering important information and key messages to audiences. Check out the first post below.

Upskilling - Total Worker Health (TWH)

If you read the December VIP issue, you will be familiar with Upskilling in 2024. This chart includes suggested areas for professional development and each month, I include content on one of the topics as it relates to safety training. This month, we are focusing on Total Worker Health.

Total Worker Health has been around for a while, but it made the 2024 Upskilling list because many safety and health-related publications named it as a top area of focus for the year. The NIOSH-funded Centers of Excellence forΒ Total Worker Health offer a wealth of free resources you can use to level up your knowledge of TWH. I especially recommend a course, Total Worker Health for OSH Professionals, offered by CPH-NEW. You can find detail about it here.

I recently recorded a presentation I have delivered in the past on Gamification for Safety and TWH. It is now available on the SafetyFUNdamentals YouTube Channel. For VIP subscribers, I created a 40+ page workbook that can be used along with the recording to increase understanding and retention. VIP subscribers also have access to the activity packet that goes along with the presentation. It contains everything needed to use all five games included in the presentation recording.

VIP Subscribers - scroll to the bottom to access your Workbook, Activity Packet and all other download links.
