Hi everyone! Itβs hard to believe we are quickly approaching the start of 2025. Do you set New Yearβs Resolutions? Approximately 40% of adults are likely to do so with only 9% completing them. While most resolutions often focus on health-related goals, professional development goals are also very important. The Upskilling Wheel I shared last December and a new wheel I will share next month, can give you ideas for your personal development goals (a replacement or an addition to your resolutions) related to workplace safety and health. I curate and create the wheel by analyzing numerous reports from reputable, well-known organizations. If you have a suggested topic that would be a great addition, please comment below or reply to this email.
In each newsletter, I share resources related to an area of the wheel. In December, I will also be including an ebook that contains all Upskilling topics for 2024, plus review questions if you want to see how much you learned throughout the year.
This month, we are upskilling in the area of Psychological Safety.
In The 4 Stages of Psychological Safety: Defining the Path to Inclusion and Innovation, by Timothy R. Clark presents a framework for creating high-performing teams which includes four progressive stages that teams must navigate to create a culture where psychological safety thrives. The four stages included in the book are 1) Inclusion Safety, 2) Learner Safety, 3) Contributor Safety, and 4) Challenger Safety. With respect to safety training, stage 3, Learner Safety, is what weβll focus on.
In the Learner Safety stage, people feel comfortable asking questions, experimenting, and giving or receiving constructive feedback. By fostering a safe space for curiosity and learning, teams meet the essential need for personal and professional development. Most safety trainers understand the importance of proper facilitation to create an environment where all types of trainees feel comfortable. If someone is not feeling at ease in a training environment, they will not be able to learn as they should. A few ways you can help create learner safety in your training sessions are shown below. Review this often to make sure you are creating the type of learning environment where people can best learn.

Whatβs Up in December?
World Aidβs Day occurs December 1st and National Handwashing Awareness Week is observed annually during the first full week of December, with the 2024 observance scheduled for December 5β11. This week emphasizes the critical role of proper hand hygiene in preventing illness and promoting overall health. With many people cooking big meals at home at this time of year and many workplace parties happening where food may be catered or brought in by different employees with varying levels of food hygiene knowledge, good handwashing practice is particularly important this time of year.
Handwashing Safety Sequence and Infographic

I have created a Safety Sequence Activity for VIP Subscribers on handwashing that can be used to help trainees remember and use the correct steps in the proper order. If you are not a VIP Subscriber and want to create your own, simply cut out the steps in the infographic, mix them up, and give a set to trainees to arrange in the correct order.
Since the handwashing safety sequence is relatively easy compared to other safety sequence activities, the activity can be made more challenging by using one or more variations.
Make it Harder Variation 1 - remove one or more of the steps before giving the packet to each team. Ask them to identify what is missing, as well as put the steps in the correct order.
Make it Harder Variation 2 - In addition to removing steps as described above, ask teams of trainees to draw the missing steps in addition to identifying them. This will also add in a bit of fun.
Sleigh Inspection π
Before any vehicle is operated, it should be inspected for hazards and to ensure that it is in good condition and can be operated safely. The following is a fun activity for adults (and children) that emphasizes the importance of vehicle safety. There are 8 hazards shown in the image below. Can you find them? (Download the full-size image and answer key here).
In September and October, I shared links for AI Video Creation Tools. Here are a few more to check out.
D-ID This site will create talking avatars with either avatars they provide or with your own image. If you upgrade, you can also have your own voice used. Since I was only experimenting with the free trial, I selected a womanβs voice with an American accent and only uploaded a static photo. The result made me laugh out loud but I think this has promise. (If you want to have a laugh too, you can see it here).
Heygen Create and translate videos into over languages. Free option available.
Vidnoz Similar to the above two options and also offers a limited free plan.
Lipsyncer Creates AI Lip Sync videos with an interesting pricing model where you pay for second of video created with no membership needed.
Exciting News! - I am proud to announce that my latest project is now available! For the past two years I have been working with 15 phenomenal safety, health, and wellness professionals to create a new book on TWH. The book, The Wiley Guide to Strategies, Ideas, and Applications for Implementing a Total Worker Health Program, is available here and on Amazon.
Also - the authors of this book have created a new newsletter, Worker Health and Wellbeing, that you can subscribe to here.
