In just a few short weeks, summer will be officially here in the U.S. and this means there is an increased risk of heat stress - both in the workplace and at home. The heat stress infographic shown below can be a good start to communicating this important topic to all workers. It’s currently available in English and Spanish but if you need another language, let me know and I’ll see what I can do. This infographic has also been modified for you to use as a training activity.

The modified version of the original infographic asks trainees to fill in the missing information. The act of trying to remember increases retention, so this is a great way to help trainees remember this important information. Download here.

Communication Corner

Great safety trainers need great communication skills. The following infographic created by Lauren Murrell provides some great advice for improving your communication by email.

Upskilling in 2025

It’s May and Collaborative Learning is the upskilling topic of the month!

Collaborative Learning

If you have ever participated in a learning activity, you know that collaboration can be a very effective learning method. Collaborative learning can be a powerful alternative to traditional methods and can result in a more engaged, skilled, and connected community of learners.

Collaborative learning refers to approaches involving joint intellectual effort toward shared goals. It typically features structured activities where participants work together to solve problems, create products, or develop understanding through direct interaction, such as most of the activities shared in this newsletter and on the SafetyFUNdamentals website.

The advantages of collaborative learning include:

Enhanced Retention and Understanding:Active dialogue between peers helps knowledge "stick" in long-term memory.

Heightened Engagement: The interactive nature of collaborative activities creates a stimulating learning environment that naturally increases participant motivation.

Organizational Knowledge Preservation: In workplace settings, collaborative approaches ensure critical expertise remains within organizations even when individual employees depart, creating resilient institutional knowledge bases.

A few examples of collaborative learning activities that you can add to your safety trainer’s toolbox include: Study Discussions, Role-Plays & Simulations, Puzzle Solving Challenges, Jigsaw Learning, Scenario-Based Decision Trees, Gamified Competitions, Peer Teaching Sessions, Collaborative Risk Assessment, Think–Pair–Share, and Build-a-Policy Activities. You can also access seven different examples by scanning the QR codes in the infographic above.

A new collaborative learning activity, Safe By Design, has been created for VIP subscribers. It is a great example of how trainees can work together to come up with new solutions to safety issues in their workplace. The download link can be found in the VIP section below.
